Thryn stood in the meadow looking up at the strange boat. Zabelle was at her side and doing the same. It was a moonless night, but the crescent shaped balloon that stretched fore and aft over the vessed cast a faint greenish light that allowed them to see. Thryn called out a greeting and her voice sounded weak and flat to her ears. She glanced at Zabelle who was still staring up at the ship. The warmth of their hike had already left her, and Thryn rebuttoned her coat. It, like the one she had lent to Zabelle, was a heavy sailor's coat of the finest quality. She was grateful for it tonight, for once they were on their way, the air would be much colder. Diamon appeared at the railing, and called down for them to toss up their bags. Thryn unshouldered hers and threw it to him. Zabelle followed suit, but her toss was short and Diamon had to lean out to catch it. A moment later, Diamon dropped a rope ladder over the side. With the younger woman's sailing inexperience in mind, Thryn motioned for Zabelle to climb up first. Thryn watched her move agilely up the rungs and was glad she could at least climb. Once Zabelle was up, Thryn grasped a rung and began her climb. As she reached the top, Diamon surprised her by offering her a hand into the boat. She wasn't sure if she should be offended or pleased, but chosing to be gracious, she extended her hand and smiled. He did not return her smile, and once her feet were on deck, he turned away and hauled up the ladder. The wind picked up suddenly and Thryn was glad when Diamon turned back and motioned them toward the small charthouse. She and Zabelle scooped up their bags and followed. |

I like the part about the faint greenish light and the way her voice sounded weak and flat to her ears. Nice, vivid touches. There are so many hints of other things going on that pulled me right in, like Thryn being glad Zabelle "could at least climb." It made me wonder about the things Zabella was NOT able to do. And I wonder what is going on between Thryn and Diamon. I loved it, and wanted to read on. |
